Their antiquarian explorations resulted in the discovery of many burial jars which, according to their accounts, were mainly filled with disarticulated human bones and sand but which never contained any mortuary gifts. This paper discusses an exceptional case. In the early twentieth century a funerary jar containing a few objects was accidentally found by Lady Violet Dickson, the spouse of a British Political Agent in Persian Gulf. These objects are mostly diagnostic of the late Sasanian period and they offer us with a more precise chronology of this form of jar burial tradition on the Bushehr Peninsula. |
