Document Details : Title: The Role of Giuseppe Garampi in the Hontheim Case Author(s): VANYSACKER, Dries Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 91 Issue: 2 Date: 2015 Pages: 281-293 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.91.2.3085094 Abstract : Johann Nikolaus von Hontheim’s De statu Ecclesiae et legitima potestate Romani Pontificis, written in 1763 under the pseudonym Justinus Febronius was put several times on the Index. In the eyes of the Roman Congregation of the Index, it contained 'heretical' tenets of canon law which put forth a system in which the pope had only a honorary primacy. In the introduction of his recent editions of the abbreviated tract of 1777 and Hontheim’s later commentary of 1781, Ulrich L. Lehner, studied the case on the basis of official documents. In this contribution, it is argued that an exclusive use of official documents risks to neglect the complexity of the context and the effects of such condemnations. By ignoring the role of Giuseppe Garampi (1725-92) and his networking behind the scenes in the Hontheim case, Lehner misses out on the real background of the story. |
