Document Details : Title: Quotation and Imitation in Hadewijch's Visioenen Subtitle: The Visionary and the Vernacular Voice of Christ Author(s): ZIMBALIST, Barbara Journal: Ons Geestelijk Erf Volume: 83 Issue: 3 Date: September 2012 Pages: 216-242 DOI: 10.2143/OGE.83.3.2182882 Abstract : This essay argues that Hadewijch’s Visioenen represent Christ’s visionary speech as a mode of vernacular devotional instruction. By drawing on the rhetorical construct of oratio recta to represent Christ’s increasingly abstract Voice in dialogue with Hadewijch’s increasingly sophisticated narrative voice, the Visioenen offer readers an opportunity for engagement with the vernacular Word of God. Hadewijch’s Visioenen thus represent an early example of the generic category of visionary texts produced by women which prioritize verbal engagement with Christ as a mode of imitatio Christi. |
