Document Details : Title: La conception spinozienne de l'allégresse Author(s): WIENAND, Isabelle Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 71 Issue: 2 Date: 2009 Pages: 361-383 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.71.2.2038081 Abstract : This article analyses Spinoza’s treatment of cheerfulness (hilaritas) throughout his works and aims at showing the limits of the principle of correspondence between mind and body. The first part is a critical reading of the texts dealing with the affect of hilarity and the second part tries to explain the plural unity of cheerfulness by referring to Descartes’ treatment of similar affects in The Passions of the Soul. The comparison leads to a critical assessment of both philosophers insofar as they ultimately assign a subaltern role to the passions in the elaboration of a good life. |
