Document Details : Title: Two Documents on the Division of Ottoman Yemen into two Belgerbegiliks (973/1565) Author(s): BLACKBURN, J.R. Journal: Turcica Volume: 27 Date: 1995 Pages: 223-236 DOI: 10.2143/TURC.27.0.2004363 Abstract : Parts of Yemen's southern coastal plain (tihāmah) and southern highlands first came under loose Ottoman authority in 923/1517 when, following Sultan Selim's conquest of Egypt (January-April, 1517), the participants left behind in Yemen from a recent Mamluk naval expedition voluntarily recognised Ottoman suzerainty. For more than two decades thereafter the leaders of these fractious mamluks and Ottoman levends (seamen), based principally around Zabid and Ta‘izz, continued, though not without interruption, to profess their loyalty to the Ottoman sultan by including his name on the coinage (sikkah) and in the Friday sermon (khuṭbah). |
