Abstract :
Guided by both seconde rhétorique and classical rhetorical theory and pedagogy, the rederijkers developed a distinctive approach to playwriting that resulted in ingeniously crafted stage texts. These demonstrate a strong drive for artistic sophistication and must have required high-level acting techniques from performers. In this article, I substantiate this thesis by comparing the composition of dialogue in a number of rederijkers’ esbatementen and zinnespelen to that of sotternieën and abele spelen, which belonged to the repertoire of the so-called kamerspelers. While kamerspelers’ scripts allowed and presumed a good deal of non-verbal improvisation, performance of rederijkers’ drama demanded strict adherence to the instructions for speech, movement, action, interaction, handling of objects and display of emotions. This indicates that the players were equipped with considerable mental strength, as well as verbal, vocal and physical agility and control.
