Document Details : Title: Een kwestie van identificatie Subtitle: De STCN, een vingerafdruk en Roemer Visschers Brabbeling uit 1614 Author(s): FLEURKENS, Anneke C.G. Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 52 Issue: 2 Date: 2010 Pages: 147-158 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.52.2.2049204 Abstract : According to the Short-Title Catalogue, Netherlands (STCN) only one edition of the collected poems of the Dutch author Roemer Visscher (1547-1620), known as Brabbeling (Twaddle), was published in 1614. The STCN’s conclusion is based on the evidence that all known copies have the same ‘fingerprint’, i.e. the position of certain signatures of quires in relation to the text above, meant to distinguish different editions of the same text. However, a research into possible variants within the edition 1614 revealed in one copy such an amount of differences that the following conclusion became inevitable: the Brabbeling was not published once but twice within the same year. This observation raises questions about the reliability of the method of fingerprints used by the STCN to discern different editions. |
